What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead” – Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela Day was inspired by a call Madiba made in 2008 for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices when he said that “it is in your hands now”.

Mandela Day is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy. It is a global movement to honour his life’s work and act to change the world for the better.

This year, CC&DW chose to dedicate our efforts toward running a clothing drive for The Haven Night Shelter Welfare Organisation. The Haven provides temporary shelter, physical care, social welfare and family re-unification services to adult homeless persons in the Western Cape.

The Haven has 15 shelters in and around Cape Town and CC&DW decided to focus on The Haven Moira Henderson House just up the road from our offices in Woodstock. Together, we were able to collect over 10 black bags of clothes, 20L of soup, and 5 bags of fruit. The CC&DW team also spent some of the day making 120 packed sandwiches for The Haven that were used as part of the packed work lunch provided to those using the shelter’s facilities.IMG_2838

The team at The Haven were highly appreciative of our donations and it seemed like the rest of Cape Town had also joined in on the Mandela Day concept with many donations of all kinds streaming in as we delivered our contributions.

Through these efforts, it is hoped that CC&DW were able to contribute to The Haven’s vision of a future where communities, organisations, and government can create the supportive network to ensure that no-one is forced to live on the streets to survive.

It is important to remember that actions, no matter how big or small, should consistently focus on the realisation or restoration of dignity and empowerment through contributions. As South Africans, we should try to make this a reality every day.
