Members of our team were delighted to have the opportunity to attend the Mamelani Projects Annual General Report meeting held in Rondebosch this past Friday. The meeting was presented to the public as well as donors and funders of the organization. Notable achievements for the financial year of March 2011 to February 2012 were also announced. The minutes taken at their Annual General Meeting was included in the program as a reference to what was produced in their annual report that was given to all that attended the presentation on Friday.
The organization derives it’s name from the isiXhosa word for “listen up”, as they believe that progress in community based work can only happen through listening. The Section 18A PBO (Public Benefit Organization) was registered in 2003 and has since grown into a highly respected community development organization that has worked with a variety of partners and funders including DG Murray Trust, MSAT, Community Chest as well as Investec Private Bank, Mediclinic CSI and Cape Union Mart.
The meeting kicked off with a warm welcome message from Mamelani Projects Youth Programme Team Leader, Gerald Jacobs. Those in attendance were treated to a special musical item which was performed by one of their new team members. This set the tone for what turned out to be an eventful morning. Instead of the the usual list of speeches and slideshows that are usually associated with these types of meetings, the talking was kept to a minimum and guests enjoyed more entertaining and artistic pieces performed by other team members such as poetry recitals, singing and dancing. From what we could see it is clearly evident that Mamelani Projects prides itself on its team and the role they play in all they great work that they get done.
After a quick run through of their budgets and expenditures by their accountant, one more song was performed and the meeting was called to an end for guests to enjoy some coffee and treats as well as a beautiful cake. We would like to thank Mamelani Projects for their invitation and wonderful hospitality as well as congratulate them on a successful past year. We wish them all the best for the future.
