The Minister in the Presidency at the time, Mr. Essop Pahad officially launched the National Youth Service Programme in August 2004. The purpose of the programme is to provide an opportunity for young people to participate in service whilst they acquire skills that can enhance their ability to access economic opportunities. The NYS model includes structured learning, practical service activities and preparation for exit opportunities. At least 30 NYS projects were implemented between 2001– 2006, reaching more than 15 000 beneficiaries at National Level. As part of the NYS the participation of initially 500 youth in the National Youth Services Programme and EPWP through service activities in the Built Environment was ensured. Through this programme the youth will develop skills, understanding and aspirations of working in the Built Environment.
