The creative industries are strategically positioned to contribute to the growth of South Africa’s economy. The music industry, in particular, has the capacity for economic and export-oriented growth.
This was the thinking behind the establishment of Cape Music Industry Commission (Cape MIC), a music sector body, or special purpose vehicle (SPV). Cape MIC was set up to leverage the music industry to be a competitor on the business and economic front. Creative Consulting & Development Works was brought on board by the Department of Economic Development and Tourism to project-manage and provide technical assistance in Cape MIC’s establishment.
The support provided by Creative Consulting & Development Works ensured a cohesive approach to getting Cape MIC up and running as a legal entity. Key tasks included:
Creative Consulting & Development Works’ assistance was an opportunity to initiate a model of best practice in the setting up of a music sector body. The business aspect of music within the entertainment industry is therefore maintained and strengthened. Stakeholders in the music industry value chain will benefit from this music sector body, thus ensuring the growth and contribution of music to South Africa’s economy.
